Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR)

Infrared Spectroscopy has recently become a commonly used tool in terms of lubricating oil analysis. This technique is used to quantify molecular organic compounds, monitor the additive depletion and identify molecular compounds resulting from the oil degradation process (oxidation).

By comparing the spectra obtained for new and used oil, it is possible to identify the changes that occurred in terms of oxidation, nitration and sulfation, as well as the presence of water and sludge/varnish (sediments resulting from the degradation of the oil).

After processing the respective spectra and obtaining quantitative parameters monitored over time, lubrication specialists and maintenance personnel will be able to make the right decisions regarding the need to replace or refresh the oil load.
