INEGI - Instituto de Ciência e Inovação em Engenharia Mecânica e Engenharia Industrial announces the open call for one (1) Research Scholarship for a Ph.D. student with a Master degree in Engineering within the framework of the project "PTDC/EMD-EMD/0980/2020 – Coronary Artery Disease Numerical Simulation and Functional Assessment by Advanced Computed Tomography” funded by FCT/MCTES, under the following conditions:

Scientific areas: Informatics and Computing Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; Biomedical Engineering

Work Plan title: Development and validation of computational methods to support the processing and analysis of myocardial blood flow in dynamic imaging studies

Admission requirements:

Priority will be given to candidates with:

a)   MSc degree in Informatics and Computing Engineering or Mechanical Engineering or Bioengineering or others considered appropriate;

b)   Applied knowledge of developing interactive software tools;

c)   Applied knowledge of image processing and analysis methods, emphasizing the focus on medical imaging;

d)   Applied knowledge of machine learning methods;

e)   Knowledge of data and/or information visualization;

f)    Interest in clinical applicability, namely in cardiology;

g)   Speaking, reading, writing, listening of Portuguese e English languages: High Priority, Very Good Level;

h)   Master's degree with an average of 14 or above, on the Portuguese classification scale;

i)     Enrollment in the Doctoral Program in Computer Engineering (PRODEI) or in the Doctoral Program in Mechanical Engineering (PRODEM) or in the Doctoral Program in Biomedical Engineering (PRODEB) or others considered appropriate, of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), in the act of signing the contract.

Eligibility of candidates:

Candidates shall meet the eligibility conditions provided for in article 9 of the FCT I.P, Research Scholarship Regulation.

Applicants with foreign academic degrees are required to submit the records of recognition of such degrees issued by a Portuguese public higher education establishment (regime governed by Decree-Law No. 66/2018, of 16 August, and Portaria No. 33/2019, of 25 January). These documents are mandatory for signing the contract. For further information, please see https://www.dges.gov.pt/en/pagina/degree-and-diploma-recognition.

Work plan:

The work to be developed under this grant, developed in collaboration with the Cardiology Service of the Hospital Center of Vila Nova de Gaia/Espinho, EPE (CHVNGE), aims to contribute with a set of computational procedures and methods for processing, visualization and interactive analysis of cardiac perfusion from computed tomography (CTP) imaging data.

The medical team involved in this project are Prof. Dr. Nuno Bettencourt, Prof. Dr. Ricardo Ladeiras-Lopes, Dr. Nuno Ferreira and Dr. Diogo Ferreira.

In this context, the work to be developed, following an iterative user-centered approach, includes, generically, the following phases:

a)   Familiarization with recent literature on CT analysis of cardiac function and existing processing and analysis methods;

b)   Familiarization with current practices for CTP analysis, namely those adopted by the CHVNGE Cardiology Service, and identification of the needs and motivations of healthcare professionals for the definition of requirements;

c)   Proposal and implementation of methods for the identification of anatomical structures of interest in CTP exams (e.g., myocardium, aortic artery);

d)   Development of methods to support the creation of an annotated CTP database, namely by providing expeditious and interactive annotation tools (e.g., by medical doctors) to support the development and validation in the subsequent phases of the work;

e)   Study and implementation of computational methods for the determination of CTP dynamic parameters (e.g., transmural perfusion, TPR), their visualization and analysis;

f)    Interactive integration of the different contributions in an interactive software tool that can be used and evaluated by healthcare professionals.

Applicable Legislation:

Research Fellow Statute, approved by Law No. 40/2004 of August 18, in the current wording published by Decree-Law No. 123/2019 of August 28; Regulation of Research Grants of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P. in force (Regulation No. 950 / 2019 of 16 December) https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/regulamento.phtml.pt.

The work will be carried out in the scope of INEGI facilities in Porto Portugal, or in other places required for the execution of the work plan.

Scientific supervision:

Prof. Doutora Sónia Pinto; Doutor Samuel Silva

Grant duration and regime:

Duration of 12 months, and may be renewed until the end of the project. The granting of the scholarships does not generate or entitle a legal-labor relationship, it is exercised under an exclusive dedication regime and the Scholarship holder is granted the Scholarship Holder Status, in accordance with the Regulation for Research Grants of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P., both in their current wording.

Expected starting date: October 2021.

Monthly allowance:

The scholarship amount corresponds to 1104,64 €, according to FCT (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores), I.P. monthly maintenance stipend table for scholarships in Portugal (Annex I - of FCT IP Research Scholarship Regulation.  The scholarship payment will be made by bank transfer.
