Municipalities in the Aveiro Region are preparing a biomass plant building with INEGI’s contribution
31 August 2021The Intermunicipal Community of the Region of Aveiro aims to build and operate a new plant for cogeneration of residual forest biomass in the region of Aveiro, to address the challenges of energy transition and reduction of emissions. It will count on INEGI’s specialists for technical-operational requirements gathering.
The goal is to have the biomass cogeneration plant, which converts forest residues into clean energy, operating in 2023. For this purpose, INEGI is working on technical clauses for contract documents relating to the supply, installation and operation of the biomass cogeneration plant.
The initiative "is in line with the National Energy and Climate Plan 2021-2030, where the use of biomass for energy uses was relevant and forest biomass is recognized as an important endogenous resource”, says Ricardo Barbosa, responsible for the project at INEGI.
This future forestry biomass valorization plant "will not only contribute to the decarbonization of activities in the region, as it uses organic matter instead of fossil fuels, but also leverage the local economy and fire prevention, through sustainable forest management ”, he adds.
