INEGI engineering contributes to the monitoring of Madeira’s airport infrastructures

10 March 2020

Increased efficiency of airport infrastructure maintenance operations, and new control methods using predictive analysis. All thanks to an engineering area called structural monitoring. This is the challenge that the MEGE - Structural Monitoring of Large Structures project, developed by ANA - Aeroportos de Portugal, with the collaboration of INEGI and the National Civil Engineering Laboratory (LNEC), aims to answer.

Being implemented at Madeira airport, the project, which started in the first quarter of 2019, will last for two years and provide the development of two independent systems for monitoring. One will be dedicated to the monitoring of deformations of the support beams of the airstrip; the other will focus on the state of the berm breakwater that protects the infrastructure, which is often subject to erosion due to strong sea turmoil.

In addition to specific equipment, these systems will require the development of computational data processing algorithms, as well as validation and implementation tests. "We will develop technological solutions for survey and comparison of the 3D shape to monitor the physical state of the breakwater, subject to erosion or collapse caused by the sea, and measure and monitor deformations of the superstructure beams, using a optics technology called digital image correlation”, explains Paulo Tavares, responsible for the project at INEGI.

The MEGE project - Structural Monitoring of Large Companies is integrated in the Madeira Operational Program 14-20, within the scope of PROCiência 2020, Incentive System for the Production of Scientific and Technological Knowledge of the Autonomous Region of Madeira. This incentive aims to reinforce research, technological development and the promotion of innovation in companies in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
