INEGI and EPAL collaborate to give water sector professionals competencies in renewable energy

13 January 2020

INEGI is one of the partner entities of the "Advanced Course on Renewable Energy in the Water Sector”, promoted by the EPAL’s Academia das Águas Livres. The course, which is already underway, will feature instructors from INEGI to provide technical and management skills in the field of renewable energy, particularly wind energy.

As José Carlos Matos, director of INEGIs Wind Energy area, explains: "Wind energy plays an important role in the context of the energy transition and decarbonisation, integrated in the electricity system, and even in complementarity with other sources, so knowing this resource is indispensable for professionals in the water sector. Specifically, since it is a sector that stands out for representing 2% of the countrys total electrical consumption and that dedicates 50% of its operating costs to energy costs. ”

Covering various renewable energies, namely photovoltaic, solar thermal, wind, hydro and biogas, the program of this course is oriented to the specificities of the sector and involves water professionals strongly involved in investment projects, operation and maintenance of renewable energy.

The wind energy module will be taught during the second semester and will cover the entire energy production chain, covering aspects ranging from wind characterization and production estimation, to site ion for project development, wind farm design and wind farm and technology ion, among others.

"In addition to providing participants with the technical expertise, we also want to provide them with forward thinking and critical thinking to better optimize the energy management of their operations and ability to make long-term decisions,” says José Carlos Matos.

Ana Maria Sousa, head of INEGIs Advanced Training area, adds: "With over 25 years of experience in the wind energy sector providing services at all points in the value chain, we are in a unique position to draw training programs that meet the real needs of the industry, making the best of our knowledge based on the reality we deal with every day.”
