Caetano Bus and Fibrauto team up with INEGI to create new passive safety solutions for buses

19 March 2021
Caetano Bus, the largest manufacturer of chassis and buses in Portugal, has teamed up with INEGI to innovate in the area of road accidents. The project, which brings together the company, the institute and Fibrauto, aims to create a new generation of buses with innovative solutions that contribute to ensuring the safety of the driver and passengers in the event of a frontal collision or rollover.

Buses are, in comparison with other vehicles, more stable and safer. However, accidents occur on portuguese roads every year, and Caetano Bus wants to create new responses to minimize the consequences of eventual accidents, namely in the electric city and tourist buses that it manufactures.

The idea is to apply new engineering concepts in the field of passive safety, that is, in the sphere of solutions that act not to prevent an accident, but after it occurs to reduce its severity.

To answer this challenge, the team is developing "structural reinforcement solutions using multi-material configurations", and solutions in case of overturning, supported by "geometric optimization of the structure and introduction of metallic hybrid zones with high energy absorption rates", explains Pedro Moreira, responsible for the technical developments of the project at INEGI.

At the same time, "modular configurations, based on mechanical devices, which allow the driver's area to be moved away from danger" are also being studied", he adds.

At this stage, the INEGI team is in charge of carrying out numerical simulations and real life tests of overturning and frontal impact on the current structures of buses. Information that will serve as a basis for the creation of new solutions and technical improvements, both in terms of body structure and in terms of mechanical and material systems.

The project "CRASH - New technological solutions for passive safety for buses" in co-promotion is co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), within the scope of the Incentive System for Research and Technological Development.
