Project title: ReCAP - Recycled Composites for high performance Applications: aircraft components and support structures


ReCAP is a flagship project, financially supported by the National Innovation Agency in the framework of Portugal 2020, aiming at the development of high-performance thermoplastic composites for aeronautic components, through the reincorporation of industrial residues ("zero waste concept”) using process methodologies characterized by a high manufacturing throughput, less expensive and more oriented towards a circular economy.

In addition, the goal of this project is to develop and optimize different fuselage prototypes – aircraft clips and brackets – using mechanical recycling strategies for the production of compounds with an equivalent or higher performance, through the reuse and recycle of composite materials. Manufacturing these components will require an optimization of the hot stamping accomplished by over molding, and their integration in complex structures will need the modification of traditional welding processes. 

Moreover, this technically demanding project will include the design / dimensioning of productive set-ups, the fabrication and characterization of semi-products, and the production of the final prototypes (hot stamped and over molded, compression molded, injection molded with short carbon fibre, etc.). These activities will be supported by computational modelling and simulation for a better decision-making. 

The position includes:

·  Identification of manufacturing process variables, their interdependencies and influences in the final product;

·  Development and characterization of manufacturing processes for thermoplastic composites;

·  Development and optimization of constructive solutions oriented to the manufacturing process, welding process and validation setups;

·  Implementation of numerical models;

·  Productive tools design and development of test setups;

·  Prototype production;

·  Dimensional analysis and correlation of experimental tests with numerical models.

·  Contribute for the project technical reports;

·  Contribute to scientific production.

INEGI’s team is looking for a candidate with the following profile:

·  Master in Polymer or Mechanical Engineering, among others;

·  Preferential will be given to a candidate having previous experience in R&D activities, with special emphasis on composite materials;

·  Team player;

·  Critical analysis and goal-oriented;

·  Responsibility, pro-activity, motivation and autonomy;

·  Fluent written and spoken English.
