Technology will help fight bacterial resistance to antibiotics

26 April 2023
Bacterial resistance to antibiotics is a serious public health problem, but technology can play an important role in combating this threat. And to fulfill this promise, the «SMARTgNOSTICS» project appears, one of the 23 innovation agendas, supported by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), which has the contribution of INEGI.

The development of bacterial resistance to antibiotics is a natural phenomenon resulting from the selective pressure exerted by the use of antibiotics, but which has undergone a very rapid expansion due to the inappropriate use of these drugs.

To combat the problem and prevent the spread of pathogenic microorganisms and resistance genes, the consortium of 11 entities proposes to develop innovative technological solutions to detect and monitor microbial resistance in human and animal health and in the agri-food sector.

The plan is to develop fast and miniaturized devices to be used in decentralized environments, in order to allow maximum connectivity.

INEGI's team will contribute with product development skills, namely in the automation of laboratory procedures.

The SMARTgNOSTICS project is financed by the European Union through the Next Generation EU and the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), under the operational program Capitalization and Business Innovation.
