INEGI wants to increase the visibility of undervalued biomass as a cross-border energy resource

21 November 2022
INEGI will once again join forces with institutions in the North of Portugal and Galicia for the valorization and use of biomass. The cross-border consortium was born in 2017 to develop new biofuels from biomass from forest pruning, shrubs, vines and kiwi production, and will meet again in 2022 to boost the realization of the energy and economic potential of biomass.

The main objective is to train, raise awareness and train agents in the biomass value chain – winegrowers, farmers, landowners, companies related to the collection and treatment of biomass, among others – in the use of non-recovered biomass.

Likewise, the consortium intends to strengthen the process of co-creation of public policies, through the identification of common strategies for the development and optimal use of biomass that is not valued in the territory.

Alongside these efforts is the Biomass Transboundary Network, which continues to grow. Created with the aim of establishing connections between specialists and agents interested in the production and use of biomass, the network now has more than 130 members.

Alongside INEGI is the Technological Center EnergyLab, which leads the project, and the Empresa-Universidade Galega Foundation (FEUGA), the Energy Technology Group of the University of Vigo, the Instituto Galego de Energia (INEGA), and the Instituto Politécnico de Viana do Castelo (IPVC).

The project «Biomass CAP: Capitalization of I+D capacity in the energy use of high potential non-valued biomass» is co-financed by the Interreg V-A Spain-Portugal 2014-2020 (POCTEP) program, through the European Union Regional Development Fund (FEDER).
