INEGI joins european event to discuss topics and strategies related to the end of life of wind turbines

09 November 2020

The 2nd edition of the conference "EoLIS - End-of-Life Issues and Strategies”, promoted by the Wind Europe association, takes place online between the 18th and 20th of November and, more once, INEGI is present at various of its initiatives.

Filipa Magalhães, INEGI consultant in the field of wind energy, was invited for the second consecutive year to join the support committee for the conference program.

As Filipa Magalhães explains, "the end of life of wind turbines in Europe will start its upward curve in the next 5 years and it is necessary to provide tools for decision making: life extension, deactivation and repowering".

The program includes the presentation of a Guide of Good Practices to be adopted in the dismantling of wind turbines, a document that includes contributions from INEGI’s team of experts. "This document aims to help decision makers plan these actions, for a sustainable deactivation. This guide also intends to expand the scope of the standard that regulates life extension (IEC 61400-28) to include the decommissioning of wind turbines and forwarding for recycling", explains Filipa Magalhães.

INEGI's work will also be highlighted during the session "Digitalization and Digital Twins to Predict Failures”. In this round table, Filipe Magalhães, professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, will present the project that brought together INEGI and EDP Renováveis with the objective of creating methodologies to know, in real time, the structural state of the wind turbines.

This forum aims to bring together the wind industry community - industry, investors, companies, academia and research institutions - to discuss the imminent end of life for a significant part of Europe's wind turbine fleet, and to outline possible lines of action.
