INEGI joins consortium to boost insect bioindustry in Portugal

10 October 2023
Boost the industrialization and commercialization of innovative insect-based products, contributing to the green transition and environmental sustainability. This is the objective of the InsectERA innovation agenda, one of the 23 innovation agendas, supported by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), which has the contribution of INEGI.

For this consortium, which brings together 42 partners, the use of insects as raw material can have different purposes - products for human and animal food, derived products for industry, such as cosmetics or bioplastics, and bioremediation services, such as the elimination of livestock effluents and urban organic waste. Therefore, they intend to create three new factories for the production of products derived from insects and at least 100 new products, processes and services based on and using insects focused on specific and well-identified market needs.

In order to make this Agenda a reality, INEGI's team will support the creation of these production units through the development of technological solutions for climate control of large-scale bioindustrial production of insects, with energy efficiency as a priority.

At the same time, it will contribute to increasing production capacity with the installation of automated systems and the digitalization of production, in order to achieve productivity and efficiency gains for producers in a true industry 4.0.

The «InsectERA» mobilizing agenda is led by Ingredient Odyssey, a company best known for its EntoGreen brand, and is financed by the European Union through Next Generation EU, which includes the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), within the scope of the operational program Capitalization and Business Innovation.
