INEGI helps shape digital certification processes for «clean» aviation in Europe

31 August 2023
The European Union is committed to boosting «clean» aviation, seeking to accelerate the creation of new solutions, without compromising safety. With this objective in mind, INEGI is supporting the creation of new regulations to guarantee the safety of future aircraft, alongside a collaborative digital certification structure.

Albertino Arteiro, responsible for the project at INEGI, explains that the objective is to "lay the foundations for certification processes for disruptive technologies and architectures using analysis tools and models, in order to pave the way for cleaner, greener and more efficient aviation".

The work takes place within the scope of an European project that involves 33 entities, including companies in the sector such as Airbus and Dassault Aviation, standardization and certification organizations, and research, development and innovation entities.

"The aircraft of the future, namely short and medium range aircraft, are beginning to be designed with the next generation of electric and hydrogen propulsion systems", highlights Albertino Arteiro.

Therefore, the project envisages the development of more robust processes and methods to ensure compliance of new technologies and secure integration. Certification is expected to improve the security of these technologies, while reducing time-to-market and maintaining European leadership and competitiveness.

The results are also expected to be translatable to different product lines and aircraft segments, such as civil aviation, helicopters, and medium-long range aircraft, affecting the entire fleet.

The CONCERTO project - Construction Of Novel CERTification methods and means of compliance for disruptive technologies has the support of Clean Aviation (European Union Clean Aviation Joint Undertaking), and is co-financed by the European Union.
